YouTube Exec: We’re Selling Ads Against ‘Less Than 3%’ Of Our Videos

youtube pogo.jpg

We know Google’s YouTube is a tough sell for advertisers. But video site’s sales team may be having an even tougher time than recent reports suggest. YouTube sales manager Brian Cusack says YouTube is able to sell ads against “less than 3%” of the total videos on the site. That shaves more than a point off the 4% floated by the WSJ two weeks ago, which cited “one person familiar with the matter.”In comments to a ClickZ conference on online video in New York, Cusack said YouTube had been embraced by the movie studio and TV network advertisers, and was making progress with more conservative marketers in retail, consumer packaged goods and home improvement categories, which are overcoming the “perceived risk of what appearing next to user-generated content.”

The biggest unknown: How many of the 4 billion or so YouTube videos watched each month actually carry ads. Presumably some of the most popular are also high-quality clips produced by partners, and those may have ads. On the other hand many of the viral hits on the site, such as last week’s “Homemade Porn,” run without advertising

Either way, it’s a sign that while YouTube has a long way to go, or perhaps a testament to their abilities that they’ll manage $200 million in 2008 revenue from such a small sliver of videos offered on the site.

GoogleDigg

July 22nd, 2008

Yet again, reports are surfacing that Google is buying social news site Digg. This time, TechCrunch reports that Google is in final negotiations to pick up Digg for about $200 million. This is the third time so far this year that Google has allegedly been in talks re: to buying the company.

If true, it’s a great return for Digg’s investors, which include Greylock Partners, Omidyar Network, Netscape founder Marc Andreessen, and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman; Digg has raised just $11.3 million in total funding, according to TechCrunch.

If the deal goes through, TechCrunch says Digg’s ad deal with Microsoft would be terminated.

Tidbits

July 22nd, 2008

I noticed Owen Frager’s new site on domaining.com - it’s at www.grandnames.com Looks like a great idea to me, a nice domain name too imo. I’m seriously thinking of signing upto it as I get the feeling it’ll do well. We all know how tricky it is to get a new venture off the ground but it look’s like he’s got the most important part right - making sure to base it on a great idea.

On another note Kelly Lieberman sent me an email last night, it’s always great to hear from another domainer as I always learn something new - hopefully they do too. Kelly mentioned a domain parking company to me that she uses DomainEmbarking.com - I hadn’t even heard of it before. Had a quick look and it looks like a very interesting idea. Anyone else used them? Feel free to send over your reviews and I’ll post them.

SuperAdvert.com

July 22nd, 2008

 blinkxvideo.jpg

I just sent the domain SuperAdvert.com to auction at Sedo

I really like this one but decided to send it to auction with a $70 bid with no reserve.

I’m in the business of selling domains so i’ll let the market decide it’s worth. If it goes for a good bit more then great. If not c’est la vie.

Google returns over 3 million results and I think it’s highly brandable. We’ll see if anyone else does.

If it catches your eye you can find it here. Auction Listing

False Economy

July 21st, 2008

Excuse me for preaching to the converted but this post is aimed at certain online Businesses.

Businesses who still - In this day and age - fail to grasp the true value of a generic product / brand related domain name that has traffic and not just any old traffic but the holy grail of online trafffic ! Targeted Traffic

How many online Businesses out there spend 1000’s + of dollars a month on adsense? How many Businesses out there aren’t happy with the conversions it brings them? How many of their other advertising campaigns aren’t that effective? How much do they spend on tv ads? Magazine ads? etc and how effective are those types of advertising ?

How many of these same enterprises shy away from securing related generic type in domains? LOADS ! They fail to grasp that such domains are a precious commodity, once secured by them they inherit the targeted type in traffic for as long as they wish to renew the domain for. A one off cost - tax deductible - which is a lifelong online asset ! Equally importantly once secured these same domains have another crucial function - their competitors don’t own them.

Direct navigation will never disappear although online trends come and go, somethings never change. People will always need debt plans, loans, food, cars, travel deals etc etc etc.

Want to sell your own Digital Product/s?

1. Sign up to CB click here to open an account

2. You create your product. - easier said than done ! If you’re product is in a saturated market it needs to be head and shoulders above the competition, if not you’re going to have to have a large marketing budget ! You also have to give a lot of thought as to how to price your product ! This is crucial, checkout what similar products are selling for, underprice and the customer gets suspicious, overprice and you’ll get no sales ! You also need to give a lot of thought as to what you will pay your affiliates - this is also crucial. Offer too little and no affiliate - never mind super affialte - will take up your cause, the name of the game is to create a brilliant product, via viral marketing in time it’ll sell itself. Over pay and you need to shift a lot more product. Before you come to market, do some great research on both your idea and what’s already out there. chances are whatever you are thinking of launching - has already been done over and over - however don’t let that stop you, just DO IT BETTER and you WILL succeed - if you work at it hard enough !

3. You create the pitch page where you will sell the product with buy now buttons. You get it approved by CB along with your thank you page where your product sits.

4. The customer comes to your pitch page, clicks ‘buy’, and pays through CB’s payment gateway.

5. If the transaction is successful - they get to your thank you page - Your product is sitting on the thank you page.

Post Launch

You might think that as a vendor you have it made - things are easy - everyone is working for you - you just collect fat pay checks. Well ok some of that IS indeed true. However here is a part of being a vendor one often overlooks and then finds it tedious to have to render:

*Customer support - IF YOUR PRODUCT goes HUGE - YOU will have a LOT of customer support to deal with. That’s a ‘good’ thing though. I would rather deal with small little problems all day due to payments and order instead of chasing them to begin with - If I can make a million by dealing with peoples download problems or other delivery problems - my only answer is “pass me the phone I’ll start right now”.

*Affiliate recruitment - You’re always going to be recruiting into your army - ALWAYS - you’re like a gang leader, and must preach to your crew that they need to recruit too - however they will refuse because they want a small team - not a saturated one. You will always be recruiting don’t forget that.

*Affiliate support - Often uderestimated. Affiliates have their own set of needs, and you must tend to them. You must help them shape their campaigns, offer them advice, give them what they need in order to make YOU money.

*Maintenance/updates - You will need to make new creatives once in a while, new articles, new videos, new ’stuff’ in order to keep you and your affiliates campaigns fresh.

*Competitive Intelligence - You will need to watch those close to your circle, and see if they are doing anything sparatic that can potentially harm your positioning. Always know what your competitors are doing.

*Management - Day to day you will have various little things you’ll need to do. You’ll notice a few of your affiliates might be bad apples, you’ll notice your site slow down or error or get hacked, you’ll notice you’re NOT converting NOR is anyone for a while, you’ll have to keep your ship running smoothly and with a smile yet firm and confident nature. Don’t forget - you are the owner of a big operation now - and you have a huge sales team to look after - a huge monetization closed loop that you must keep squeeky clean in order for it all to equate to that elusive first thought and end goal - MONEY. If you do all of this, and you succeed - what do you do? Launch another product, and another - soon you will have an array of revenue streams, some will outdo others, some will fail miserably, overall though - THAT is leverage.

Yahoo

July 21st, 2008

jerryyang9.jpg

Here’s the official end of the Yahoo-Icahn proxy war: Yahoo will give the corporate raider 3 seats on its board (one for himself, plus two more), and Carl agrees stop fighting.

The basics:
Yahoo will keep 8 of its 9 existing directors; Activision/Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick will leave.
The board gets expanded to 11 seats. Carl gets one, and the board picks two more from a pool that includes his proposed slate, plus former AOL CEO Jon Miller. Which means: Carl, Miller and someone else join the Yahoo board, but won’t be able to do anything beyond complaining at meetings.

Yahoo and Carl explain how all the insults they lobbed back and forth at each other for the past few months, and in particular the past few weeks, were all nothing, really, and everything’s going to be great now.
If you’re so inclined, you could view this as Jerry and co caving: If they were ultra-confident that they were going to win the proxy vote next month, they wouldn’t have given Carl a thing. On the other hand, they can now go back to the business of trying to fix/save Yahoo, and get an experienced Internet mind (Miller’s) to offer some advice. That seems like a pretty good trade to us.

Release:

SUNNYVALE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - News), a leading global Internet company, announced today that it has reached an agreement with Carl Icahn to settle their pending proxy contest related to the Company’s 2008 annual meeting of stockholders.

Under the terms of the settlement agreement, eight members of Yahoo!’s current Board of Directors will stand for re-election at the 2008 annual meeting: Roy Bostock, Ronald Burkle, Eric Hippeau, Vyomesh Joshi, Arthur Kern, Mary Agnes Wilderotter, Gary Wilson and Jerry Yang. In view of the settlement agreement with Mr. Icahn, and the termination of the proxy contest, Robert Kotick has decided not to stand for re-election to the Board at the 2008 annual meeting.

Following the 2008 annual meeting, the Yahoo! Board will be expanded to 11 members. Carl Icahn will be appointed to the Board and the remaining two seats will be filled by the Board upon the recommendation of the Board’s Nominating and Governance Committee from a list of nine candidates recommended by Mr. Icahn, which includes the eight remaining members of the Icahn slate of nominees and Jonathan Miller, currently a partner in Velocity Interactive Group and former Chairman and CEO of AOL.

As part of the settlement agreement, Mr. Icahn, who owns an aggregate of 68,786,320 shares, or 4.98% of Yahoo! common stock, has agreed to withdraw his nominees for consideration at the annual meeting and to vote his Yahoo! shares in support of the Board’s nominees.

“We are gratified to have reached this agreement, which serves the best interests of all Yahoo! stockholders,” said Yahoo! Chairman Roy Bostock. “We look forward to working productively with Carl and the new members of the Board on continuing to improve the Company’s performance and enhancing stockholder value. Yahoo! is a world-class company with an extremely bright future, and collaborating together, I believe we can help the Company achieve its ambitious goals.”

“This agreement will not only allow Yahoo! to put the distraction of the proxy contest behind us, it will allow the Company to continue pursuing its strategy of being the starting point for Internet users and a must buy for advertisers,” said Yahoo! Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Jerry Yang. “No other company in the Internet space has our unique combination of global brand, talented employees, innovative technologies and exceptional assets, attributes that will help us take advantage of the large and growing opportunity ahead of us. I look forward to working together with our new colleagues on the Board to make that happen.”

Mr. Icahn said, “I am very pleased that this settlement will allow me to work in partnership with Yahoo!’s Board and management team to help the Company achieve its full potential. While I continue to believe that the sale of the whole Company or the sale of its Search business in the right transaction must be given full consideration, I share the view that Yahoo!’s valuable collection of assets positions it well to continue expanding its online leadership and enhancing returns to stockholders. I believe this is a good outcome and that we will have a strong working relationship going forward. Additionally, I am happy that the board has agreed in the settlement agreement that any meaningful transaction, including the strategy in dealing with that transaction, will be fully discussed with the entire board before any final decision is made.”

In response to Mr. Kotick’s decision to step down from the Board, Mr. Bostock said, “I would like to personally thank Bobby for his dedicated service to Yahoo! these past 5 years. Bobby has been a valuable resource to our Board and the Company and we are grateful for his contributions. He wanted to help see the Company through this recent chapter, but made it clear to me that once the proxy contest was resolved, he was eager to focus his efforts on his work as CEO of the newly merged Activision Blizzard and his other business and civic pursuits.”

Kevin Mitnick

July 20th, 2008

mitnick_hope.jpg

Kevin Mitnick is going to tell his side of the story. And he’s going to get paid for it.

Speaking to an adoring crowd of 800 at the Hackers On Planet Earth conference, Mitnick, once described as the “most wanted computer hacker in the world,” announced that he had signed a deal with Little, Brown and Company to tell his life story. “Finally I get to tell my side,” he said, saying the conditions of his parole kept him from profiting from his crimes — including writing a biography — for the past seven years.

Mitnick was convicted of computer crimes in 1999. At sentencing, prosecutors argued Mitnick should be subject to special treatment while incarcerated because the hacker could “start a nuclear war by whistling into a telephone.” A judge agreed, and Mitnick was sentenced to solitary confinement. The perceived unfairness of the sentence made Mitnick a cause célèbre within the hacker community, and sites like freekevin.com sprang up on the Internet.

Mitnick promised the new book will be a tell-all about his hacking stunts, which relied on his speciality of “social engineering” — hacker-speak for tricks that rely less on technical wizardry and more on duping human beings into giving up information. But Mitnick, who now makes an honest living (I hope) as a computer security consultant, also enjoys finding holes in software. At HOPE, he showed off his latest hack, which involves scripting the “asterisk” open-source telephony program to show Caller ID information for anyone who calls him, even if that phone’s Caller ID is set to “private.”
